A 64-year-old gunman rained down hundreds of bullets on a packed outdoor concert along the Las Vegas Strip Sunday night, killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 400 in what is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The shooter, Stephen Paddock, fired numerous rounds from his 32nd floor perch in the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino, ambushing a concert by country musician Jason Aldean during the Route 91 Harvest festival around 10 p.m.
Bursts of automatic gunfire continued after Aldean fled the stage and his band came to a sudden halt. Screaming concertgoers ran for their lives, tripping over each other while trying to escape — with no idea where the gunfire was coming from, according to horrific footage of the attack.
After searching the hotel floor-by-floor, police blasted open the door to Paddock’s room and found him dead.
A woman identified as a companion to Paddock, Marilou Danley, was detained by police Monday morning. She did not appear to have any direct link to the shooting.
From his high-rise hotel room, Paddock unleashed carnage on the concert grounds below.
Scores of people, some covered in blood, could be seen lying on the grass while others in cowboy hats and blue jeans cowered close to the ground, which was littered with abandoned cups and aluminum cans.
Lombardo said a pair of on-duty police officers were shot in massacre. Several members of another police force from southern California were among the concertgoers.
A statement from the Bakersfield Police Department said one of their off-duty cops suffered non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not immediately identified.
The visiting officers were unable to return fire, the statement read.
Another officer from an unspecified agency was critically wounded.
